The Lowdown on SAGE Testing

The schools in the Alpine School District have received the SAGE testing scores from the tests that students in grades 3-6 took at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. You can click HERE to read a letter from the administration about the test results.

In this morning's PTA meeting, Dr. Thomas talked with the parents present about the SAGE results at Saratoga Shores.

Over all, the test scores were lower than the results we might have expected from CRT tests. This isn't because our students are performing worse; it's because the SAGE test is different from the CRT test. Comparing the two tests is like comparing running with swimming. A great swimmer may cover the same distance as a great runner, but the runner will have a faster time because running is just easier than swimming.

You can click HERE to see the data specific to the SAGE test results for Saratoga Shores Elementary. (You can change the settings from the drop-down menus on the left side of the screen to view results from other schools, other districts, or the state as a whole.)

Saratoga Shores performed the best of the 12 elementary schools on the west side of the Alpine School District, which is the largest school district in the state. The Alpine School District had the 2nd highest scores in the state on the SAGE test. Our school had the highest writing proficiency score in the district. SAGE results demonstrate that teachers are Saratoga Shores are working well together. Are there improvements still to be made? Of course. But the SAGE test helps our teachers and administration recognize where they are falling short, so they can make specific plans to improve. Teachers know how the students in their classes are doing, so they can tailor their lesson plans to help keep (or get) students on track for college and career readiness, which is what the SAGE test measures.

Parents will be receiving SAGE results for individual students soon (goal is before Thanksgiving). The school administration is working on how to best distribute that information.

If you have any questions or concerns about the SAGE test, Dr. Thomas would love to speak with you. You can call the school to schedule an appointment to meet with him.
