Reflections Winners - Westlake Council

The Saratoga Shores PTA is proud to announce the following Reflections participants for winning at the Westlake Council level. They now move onto the Regional level.

We would also like to recognize our Reflections Chair (for many years), Joy Peterson; Co-Chair, Brittany Berbert; and others who were absolutely incredible in facilitating this invaluable program for our school. We could not do Reflections without these wonderful souls willing to donate countless hours of their very precious time.

Having the opportunity to witness the creative works of these students was a special opportunity I am grateful to have had. It reiterated the importance of our school's involvement in the Reflections contest. I am enamored of our school and the abilities of our wonderful sharks!

Sharks Fitness Challenge Festivities Continue

Many students at Saratoga Shores continue to participate in the Sharks Fitness Challenge, which is to run or walk 100 miles before the challenge ends in the spring. Participants are awarded badges at each 25-mile mark, and several students have earned badges already.

On Friday, November 22, there was a Color Me Rad race series as part of the challenge. As one fourth-grader put it, "Some famous runners came. We had a squat competition, and some people ate oranges to be healthy." Kudos to all who participated!

Sharks Donate Candy to Members of the Military

On Friday, November 1, some health-minded students at Saratoga Shores donated their Halloween candy to members of the military. Mr. Larson was at the school to represent the Army National Guard. He walked with students over their lunch break and also gave Lowe's Xtreme Air Sports passes to the students who donated their candy. He collected 192 pounds of candy.

Increase your behavioral toolbox, by learning how to use positive reinforcement and logical consequences to help your child increase positive behaviors. By using simple reinforcement and consequence strategies you can help your child succeed at following your directions, completing homework, following home routines, etc.

Presented by Amanda Quigley. Amanda has been a school psychologist for 5 years in Alpine School District. She enjoys helping teachers and parents discover how to help their students with behavior struggles and has been able to participate in some great successes.

Sharks Fitness Challenge

Great things are happening at Saratoga Shores. With generous donations from our PTA we are excited to announce our inaugural Sharks fitness challenge. This program will begin today and run throughout the school year.

We will be challenging each child to walk or run 100 miles throughout the school year. Registration forms will be sent home on Monday, October 7. Those who register within the first week will receive a pedometer to,track their progress. We are also asking for a $2 donation.

We will have an organized walk each week and fun events throughout the year to keep the kids on track, along with prizes at each 25 miles.

Unleash your artistic talents with this year's Reflections contest!

The 2013 theme is “Believe, Dream, Inspire.” Students are encouraged to create and submit works of art in eight areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, theater, photography, visual arts, and three dimensional art.

The purpose of the national Reflections program is to encourage children to experience and explore their artistic talents. Start your child’s creative juices flowing by asking them what things they do or see or imagine that relates to the theme. Help them narrow that idea down to a category that highlights their artistic talent, or to attempt a new artistic experience…something they have never tried before.

Pick up an entry form (you can print them off by clicking a link at the side of this page, or pick up a copy of the entry form at the front office), and print off specific rules for your project (click on the link at the side of this page for the category that your student is entering) to help you format or display the final product. Make sure to read and follow the rules carefully and note that the entry form and artwork release form must be signed by student and parent.

Every child who enters will be recognized for his or her attempt, and for the first time, this year we will be having an art show to display each entry for parents and the whole school to enjoy.

2013 School + PTA Fund-Raiser

The annual fund-raiser has begun. On Friday, your student should have brought home a big envelope with all the information, order forms, and coupons. This year the fund-raiser will go toward funding the following:

  • Technology advancements in the classrooms
  • Student recognition (new Shark Tokens program)
  • PTA events and programs (Reflections, Safety Week, Donut Dates, maturation classes, Shark Fitness Challenge, field day, Dads Days, and family events)
There are two ways you can support the fund-raiser:
  • Make a direct donation. 100% of your donation will go to fund equipment, programs, and events at Saratoga Shores. Your donation is fully tax-deductible. If your employment matches donations, that's a quick way to double your donation. Every year we have parents who express their desire to make donations over having their children sell stuff. We chose this fund-raiser because it allows us the direct donation option & still lets students earn rewards.
  • Subscribe to a magazine for your child or anyone in your family. The list of magazines available is super inclusive. You can even renew subscriptions to magazines you already receive as a part of this fund-raiser. Magazines are a great way to get your children excited about reading.

Students will earn a keychain monkey for every $10 donation and every magazine subscription they collect during the fund-raiser, which ends on September 30. Last year's fund-raiser had penguins, and they were very popular with the students! Students collect their monkeys by turning in a monkey coupon completed by a parent for every $10 donation they collect or subscription they sell. Students turn in order forms and money at the end of the fund-raiser (or when they are finished with whatever they plan to do). They can turn them in to their teachers or directly to the front office. If you need to print out more monkey coupons, click HERE.

We need people September 23-30 for morning kindergarten (9:20-9:35) and lunchtime (10:55-12:15). We have afternoon kindergarten covered already. Thanks to everyone who already signed up to help!

Subscribing to the School Calendar

This is a post for techy people who would like to subscribe to the school calendar, which is maintained by both the front office staff (mostly Krista Robinson) and the PTA personnel (mostly Jennifer Taylor). 

If you subscribe to the calendar, you can get feeds, sync it with your mobile device, or view it directly on any web browser. This is a handy way to stay in touch with what's happening at Saratoga Shores. If you subscribe to the calendar, you can also get automatic reminders if they are entered into calendar events.

To subscribe to the calendar using Apple's iCal or any calendar that uses the iCal format, use this URL:

You can use the following URL to view the calendar in any web browser. However, if you're going to bookmark something in a web browser, may I humbly suggest that you bookmark this blog and get the calendar AND everything else we post here. 

I'd post exact steps for how to subscribe to the calendar, but they are different for each device. I'm hoping that you can figure it out from your device. If you really, really want the calendar and you can't figure it out, e-mail with something like Calendar in the subject line. Explain what you are trying to do (which device you have and whether you have a Google account) and I (Jennifer) will try to help you.

Smith's Earn & Learn

Did you know Smith's will give money to the school for your purchases if you enroll in the Earn & Learn program and tie your Fresh Values card to Saratoga Shores? Our school has earned several thousand dollars from this program in past years. We'll earn even more if we have more participation (and less if people don't renew their memberships, which expire every September and must be renewed).

If you're already enrolled in the program, it only takes 30 seconds at the register for you to renew your membership. A bar code will print on the bottom of your receipt when you buy groceries. Ask the cashier to re-enroll you with the same school. Any cashier can do it, and it's seriously speedy. Carolyn did mine, and it took about 10 seconds, no lie.

If you aren't enrolled in the program, just take your Fresh Values card to the customer service area and tell them you'd like to enroll in the Earn & Learn program. They'll take your card, scan it, find Saratoga Shores' bar code in their binder and scan it--and that's it. It's also easy to enroll online by clicking HERE.

You can also ask your parents and neighbors to enroll in the program, even if they don't have children at the school. It all adds up to easy money for our school.

Message from our 2013-2014 PTA President

Hi All--

So it's the Day Back to School Eve for some of the kids and the Eve of the Day Back to School Eve for the rest of you (well, except kindergarteners).  Suffice it to say, it is an exciting time of year!

The Saratoga Shores open house is tomorrow, Monday, August 19, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. The PTA is forgoing the hotdog dinner this year, so we can focus on getting info out about PTA and wheedle people like you to sign up for volunteer positions. Please look for us (hope to be hard to miss) by the main entrance between 5:00 - 6:30. 

This year, we're letting the PTA parent "back to school" volunteers have 4:00-5:00 free, so we can take our own children to meet their teachers, etc. during that first hour of the open house. In the past, many of the PTA moms have missed out on that because we've been too busy volunteering at the front of the school the whole time, and that just seems wrong. We hope you'll come see us after 5:00 and join the PTA. I hope every one of you will stop by to see how you can help our school in big or small ways this year, as well as join the PTA for only $6. We will also have a volunteer sign-up on the wall near the office; please go there if you'd like to help this year. Although, if you'd like to come talk to me or ask questions, my goal is to brush my teeth extra well that day so as not to make anything about our conversation unpleasant (I'd like to put a sarcastic emoticon here but now that I've stated that, I'm feeling a strong need to follow through on that promise). As per a few suggestions we've received, we have some new and exciting things happening this year; the more help we have the better they can be! Many hands make light but RAD work (I like the word "rad," so that's my variation on the quote). 

We will be having PTA meetings the first Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. You're welcome at PTA meetings; just check in at the front office, and the secretary will tell you where we are meeting. We will also be holding a feedback session on that same day at 4 p.m. (if attendance warrants this second meeting). I'm excited about the opportunity to include more people in our meetings and hope this will help.

PTA is meant to help facilitate programs at our school and improve the relationship between the parents, teachers and students. That is our only agenda. Well, that, and to make Saratoga Shores the best elementary school in the history of the universe. Lofty goal? Maybe. Still, come help us be the most RAD we can be in 2013-2014!

Summer Office Hours

The front office will be open most Tuesdays from 9:00-11:00. If you have any updated immunizations that need to be recorded or have any questions, please feel free to call the school during that time or stop by. New Student Registration will be on Tuesday, August 6. Please help spread the word if you have any neighbors or friends that have moved into the area, so we can get everyone registered for the next school year.

Field Day

There will be two sessions each day: one from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. and one from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. The PTA is looking for volunteers to help run the stations. Teacher Appreciation Week: May 6-10

The following is a suggested daily schedule for Teacher Appreciation Week. Remember these are just suggestions. Room moms may alter the schedule to meet the teacher's suggestions.

Monday -- Door Decorations
Door decorations can be done after school on the Friday before (May 3) or Monday morning (May 6). Some teachers prefer a simple poster board placed on their door instead of having the entire door covered or even a thank you card instead of a poster.

Tuesday -- Have a Snack-tacular Day
Students can bring in one of their teacher's favorite snacks. Some room moms have a teacher survey that provides information about the teacher's favorite things, and they can share that information with parents. Other parents just need to ask the teacher.

Wednesday -- You are a few of our Favorite Things
Encourage students to be creative! They can bring in a small gift for their teacher or ask the students to make their teacher a thank you card, bring in a flower, or create a craft or draw a picture with the teacher's favorite color. Many possibilities!

Thursday -- "Thanks for helping us get supplied for life!"
Ask your teacher if he/she is in need of any classroom supplies.

Friday -- "A Night Out"
We encourage Room Moms to ask in advance for each student to bring a donation ($1 or whatever they would like to contribute) for a group gift card to give the teacher on Friday. Make sure to let it be known that no student is obligated to provide a donation -- strictly voluntary! Even if you only collect $10, that is great. Teachers love to receive gift cards to a favorite store to buy books or supplies for their classroom (Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble, etc.) or even to a favorite restaurant for a night out for themselves.

Spring Carnival - April 26

The Spring Carnival is coming to Saratoga Shores on April 26, and it's gonna be great! There will be food, game and activity booths, a dunk tank, a Sugar Shuffle, and inflatables. Mark your calendar now, and plan to attend this fun, family event.

How much will things cost?

There will be several FREE things, so if you want to come but you don't want to spend any money, go for it! (Free things will include  face "painting," hair tinsel, spray color, soda can ring toss, duck pond and fishing with prizes, hula hoop contest, bean bag toss & football toss. In addition, every child who comes will get a free glow bracelet.)

Everything else will cost tickets. $10 for a white meal deal ticket, 50 cents for blue tickets that go toward other food and activities.

Pizza meal deal (medium pizza, 6 BYU brownies, 6 waters/Capri Suns): $10 (one white ticket)
Single slice of pizza: 2 tickets
Single BYU brownie: 2 tickets
Water or Capri Sun: 1 ticket

Popcorn: 1 ticket
Cotton candy: 1 ticket (Will be premade this year! NO insane lines!)
Otter Pop: 1 ticket OR one Box Top
Sugar Shuffle: 1 ticket

Train ride: 2 tickets
Inflatable slide or obstacle course: 2 tickets
Dunk tank (3 balls to try to dunk a teacher!): 2 tickets

You can buy tickets in the gym on the evening of the carnival, or you can pre-purchase them on Wednesday (4/24) or Thursday (4/25) during lunch - 11:00 until noon OR all day 7:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. on Friday, April 26, outside the front office.

Battle of the Books Volunteers Needed

Click HERE to sign up to help with Battle of the Books this week if you can. Our first day of battles was today, and they will continue through Friday, March 8.

The most urgently slots are highlighted in green on the sign-up sheet. If there is no second volunteer in a slot, the teacher will fill in as the reader. The sign-up sheet shows the classroom where your battle will be taking place, so you'll know where to go. Please check in at the media center first, about 15 minutes before your battle (or the first of your battles if you are doing more than one in a row).

It's fun and easy to volunteer! If you've never done it before, just check in at the front office. Then go to the media center about 15 minutes ahead of your volunteer time, and Gina Christensen will give you some quick training.

Battle of the Books Volunteers Needed

Gina Christensen, our school librarian, is looking for some parents who are willing to be judges for America's Battle of the Books, which begins TOMORROW (March 4) and continues through March 8 at Saratoga Shores. It's fun and easy to be a judge. If you haven't had prior experience, just check in at the office and go to the media center a little before your battle, and Mrs. Christensen will tell you how it works. Thank you!
