Snowflakes for Sandy Hook Elementary

In an effort to help comfort the Newtown, CT, community after the tragedy that took place, the Sandy Hook PTA is hoping to transform their new school into a Winter Wonderland for their students as they welcome them back in January. They are requesting a variety of paper snowflakes to help decorate the hallways of the school.

We would like to encourage you to join us in helping them achieve this goal by making homemade paper snowflakes. We plan to send one giant care package of snowflakes to them. Feel free to get as creative as possible in the making and/or decorating of your snowflakes.

If you or your students are planning on contributing snowflakes to this wonderful effort, please make sure they arrive at our office by January 7th so they can be included in the shipment on January 8th.

Please send your snowflakes to:

2915 Premiere Parkway, Suite 300
Duluth, GA 30097

Warm Regards,

Box Tops + Soup Labels

The Box Tops and Campbell's soup labels competition is rolling right along. Some classes have certainly submitted more labels and Box Tops than others. There isn't a visual display of the contest in the hallway yet, but our coordinator, Erica McKee, is counting and keeping a class tally already.

You can submit Box Tops and soup labels in any quantity. It's nice if you clip them neatly, but it's not a requirement. We do ask that if you use collection sheets (available HERE), you only attach Box Tops, not soup labels--and please use glue or tape, not staples.

If you submit soup labels, we don't need the whole label, but we DO need the UPC code not just the picture of the cute little guy holding the pencil or the red square with the logo. There are Labels for Education UPC codes on all Campbell's soup products, lots of Progresso soups, Pepperidge Farm products, Glad and Bic products, Prego, V8, Danimals--lots of products you may be buying.

The following graphics show the Labels for Education proofs of purchase as they need to be returned. Thanks for helping us make this program a success at Saratoga Shores!

School Yearbooks

Got an artist in the family? We are looking for cover artwork for this year's school yearbook. Use your Thanksgiving break to draw a fabulous cover for this year's yearbook. We will be judging and picking the cover November 30th. All artwork that is turned in will be displayed in the front foyer for at least one week after the cover is chosen.
Here are the instructions: The cover needs to be drawn vertically (portrait) on a white sheet of computer paper. Please leave the bottom inch blank for school info. Only use crayons or colored pencils, please! Make sure your name, teacher and grade are written on the back in pencil. Hand artwork into the office on or before November 29th.

ALSO - Prices on yearbooks will be going up to $12 as of December 1st. If you'd like to purchase your yearbook for $10, now is your final opportunity. Money must be handed into the office on or before November 30th to receive the $10 price. Checks should be made out to SS PTA. Click here for a yearbook order form that you can print out and send to the school with your payment.

Halloween

Halloween Parade Times
9:30 AM for the morning students. We will reach the gym about 30 minutes after we start.
12:45 PM for the afternoon kindergarten and pre-school students. We will parade through those rooms only.

Halloween Celebration
Classes will celebrate Halloween tomorrow.

Students are to come to school in costume and can either remain in their costumes the entire day or may opt to change after the morning activities. Please follow the guidelines of each teacher and those listed below. Let’s make this a safe and fun Halloween for everyone!

Costume Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Students will move from room to room to display their costumes for the students of the school. Seating in the gymnasium will be provided for approximately 300 parents. Parents, if you choose to watch in the hallway, please stay close to the wall and do not block access for students to move about the building.
Our parade will begin with the morning kindergarten students in the 6th grade hall, proceed south down the east hallway, and over to the 1st grade hall. As we pass thorough that class, they will join in at the end of the line. Students will then pass through the gymnasium. Once they get back into their room, they will finish viewing the parade. There will be a parade just for afternoon pre-school and kindergarten students at 12:45 p.m. that will move through those rooms only.

Limo Helpers Needed

The students who earned a limo ride & lunch in connection with the school fund-raiser will ride the limo on Tuesday (October 23) or Wednesday (October 24). There will be NO make-up rides if students cannot make it on one of these days. You should hear from the school secretary with your assigned time if your child or children earned a limo ride. If you don’t get a call by Monday, please call the front office at 801-766-6440.

The PTA is finding volunteers to help with getting the students into and out of the limo. We would like two volunteers at Saratoga Shores and two volunteers at the Lakeside Lodge between 11-12:30/1:00. This is a great time to help out and be around in case you want a photo of your child with the limo.

Click here to see the details and sign up. Thank you!

Reflections: The Magic of the Moment

Reflections Contest 2012 has officially started!  Our theme this year is…
Students are encouraged to create and submit works of art in eight areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, theater, photography, visual arts, and three dimensional art.

The purpose of the national Reflections program is to encourage children to experience and explore their artistic talents. Start your child’s creative juices flowing by asking them what things they do or see or imagine that relates to the theme. Help them narrow that idea down to a category that highlights their artistic talent, or to attempt a new artistic experience…something they have never tried before.

To begin, read the instructions for entering. Print the specific rules for your project (from the links at the bottom of this post) to help you format or display the final product. Please read and follow the rules carefully. Next, complete an entry form and an artist's statement. (If you can't print the forms from the links, you can pick one up from the hanging folders on the Reflections bulletin board, across from the office at the school.) Note that the entry form and artwork release form must be signed by student and parent.

Every child who enters will be recognized for his or her attempt.

Start planning your artistic projects now;  our school deadline is November 2.

Fund-Raiser Help Needed

Please click here if you can help with the fund-raiser tomorrow, Monday, or Tuesday from 11:00 - 12:10. Tomorrow we are trading penguins and showing off the light trick, so we could use a few extra people. On Tuesday, we'll be collecting all the order forms and money, so we need extra volunteers then also.

(If your child is all finished collecting orders and donations, you can turn in the envelope during lunchtime. The PTA volunteers are prepared to start collecting them.)

Spring Carnival This Friday

The Spring Carnival is going to be this Friday, April 20, from 6-8 p.m. at Saratoga Shores. It is going to be fun for the whole family. It looks like we are going to have great weather for this event too.

You can come to the carnival and not spend a cent and still enjoy the games & activities. Or, if you want to splurge, family meals will be available for $10 (medium pizza, drinks, BYU brownies). Cotton candy and popcorn will be available for 50 cents (1 ticket), participating in the cake walk with be 50 cents (1 ticket), and the dunk tank will be $1 (2 tickets for 3 balls to try to dunk a teacher). Profit from all food sales and the dunk tank will go toward a digital marquee for the school. If you want to avoid lines to buy tickets, you can pre-purchase them at the school this Wednesday.

We are in need of volunteers to help everything run smoothly. We've set things up so the shifts for volunteers are only half an hour, so you won't feel like you're chained to a booth. Please click here to sign up if you can help. Or if you'd rather donate a cake for the cake walk, that would be fantastic!

Pictures + PTA Meeting

Today is spring picture day at Saratoga Shores. We will also have a PTA meeting at 10:00 in the PTA room at the school. Everyone is welcome!

Friday, March 30, 2012

Spring Carnival

The Spring Carnival at Saratoga Shores will be on Friday, April 20, from 6-8 p.m. This isn't a fund-raiser; it's just a fun family night.

We are looking for parents to help with half-hour shifts at the booths. We are keeping the shifts short, so you can have fun with your kids instead of feeling like you're stuck in a booth all night. Because the shifts are short, we need more volunteers to keep everything running, so we'd LOVE to have you volunteer. If you can help, click here to sign up. There are several booths where students in 5th grade or older can help, so if you have students that age who'd like to be involved, you can sign them up to help too.

We are looking for a parent to coordinate the following booths. As the coordinator, you would set up the booth from 5:30 - 6:05 and train the first volunteers on what to do. Then you're free to do whatever you want. You do not need to provide anything other than your time and your willingness to help. Everything will be provided for you. So even if you are a booth coordinator, you will not be be chained to one booth for two hours. If you want to be the coordinator, put your name in the spot that says in the top row of the sign-up list for that booth.

  • Basketball
  • Hair tinsel (need someone who knows how to do it and is willing to show a few other people)
  • Football toss
  • Hula Hoop Contest
  • Bowling
There's a planning meeting on Monday, April 2, at 3:00 in the PTA room at the school if you'd like to help with planning. Everyone is welcome; however, you do not need to come to the planning meeting just because you're signing up to help in a booth. At the meeting, we will be planning food, materials needed for the booths, setup, etc.

Thanks for your help. Let's make this a great event for families!

Cookie Dough Fund-Raiser

Orders for the cookie dough fund-raiser are due today (March 27)... or tomorrow if you think you can get another order by postponing for one day.
Money the school earns from this fund-raiser will help pay for a new marquee on the north and east sides of the building and will help fund additional programs at the school. If you'd like to make a donation without ordering cookie dough, you can do so by sending payment to the front office and indicating it is a donation. Thanks for your support!

School Yearbooks

Every year when the yearbooks come in, many students want them. Trouble is, we need to order them in advance. Some parents get upset that they can't buy a yearbook for their student at that time. Now (before March 23) is the time to order yearbooks for $12. You can send cash or a check made out to SS PTA, along with an order form (if you still have that one that was sent home) or just send payment in and envelope and include your student's name, grade, and teacher's name. You can see if you pre-ordered a yearbook by clicking here.

If you have pictures that you'd like to see included in the yearbook, you can send them to sharksyearbook@yahoo.com. Thanks!

New Core Curriculum + Volunteers Needed

There is a meeting tonight at Saratoga Shores at 6:00 p.m. to discuss the new core curriculum that will be adopted throughout Utah schools for next school year. Parents are encouraged to come get the scoop.
We will discuss our timeline, share standards associated with the curriculum, and have samples for new math materials. We will request parent input on the selection of math materials at this meeting and throughout the next couple of weeks for anyone interested. The current math materials are for sixth grade and can be viewed after Thursday (3/22) in the office.

(There is also a meeting tonight at Westlake for the new high school core curriculum. The Westlake meeting is at 7:00 p.m. Sorry to overload the night with meetings for those of you with students in both schools!)

The PTA is still looking for volunteers who can do a 1-hour shift to count money collected as part of Jump Rope for Heart. Volunteers are needed on Friday, March 23, from 1-4. You can click here to sign up for a shift. (The last shift will probably end closer to 3:30 than 4:00, especially if we have sufficient volunteers earlier in the afternoon.)

Paying for School Lunch

I've been a fan of MealPayPlus for a while because it makes it easy to keep track of how much lunch money your students have in their accounts and to make school lunch payments when needed. Now the program has changed its name to MyPaymentsPlus, but it's better than ever before because now it's FREE to make payments, whereas you used to pay a about a 4% fee when you made payments (though it was always free to check balances).

You can use MyPaymentsPlus to:

·         Check student balances
·         Make payments
·         Receive low balance e-mail reminders
·         Set up auto-replenish
·         View purchase history

If you were already a MealPayPlus customer, you have all the same features as before without making any changes. It's just that now they are all free.

If you've never used online payments for school lunch, but now it sounds appealing, you can sign up for a free account at www.MyPaymentsPlus.com. First get your student's student ID number. You can get it from Skyward or by calling 801-766-6441 and asking the school secretary. If you have students in other Alpine School District schools, you can sign them all up under the same account, but you will need each student's ID number. After you have your student ID numbers, click the Register for a FREE account button on the left side of the page. Choose Utah and Alpine School District from the menus, and the rest is easy-breezy to set up.

I have students in three different schools, and I just love that this program makes it easy for me to stay on top of school lunch payments. Maybe it will help you too!
